Start of school at a younger age may reduce risk of obesity girls years later, suggests a new study.

The researchers analyzed data from nearly 6,000 girls in the U.S. National Longitudinal Survey of Youth.

Girls who were eligible to begin school at a younger age than most of her classmates were significantly less likely to be overweight during adolescence. were girls, the school started at an older age than most of their classmates tend to overweight in youth, investigators found.

A similar effect was not found in boys, lead author Ning Zhang said of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and his colleagues.

The study was published online 14th December in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

Peer influence can one reason why girls start school at a younger age are rarely overweight, the authors suggest.

"In every class, young girls at a relatively older friends who are more cautious with their weight and appearance may be exposed," Zhang said in a journal news release.

In addition, young girls for their class earlier contact with more detailed and demanding health and nutrition information in school and have the opportunity to participate in advanced classes as well as physical activity.
